Only one member of the current Lyon squad has ever played against Valenciennes, whereas seven of Friday’s opposition have already crossed paths with the champions...

Maxence Flachez who began his Ligue 1 career with OL back on August 29, 1992 against Marseille and also played for Martigues and Sochaux, has played OL on ten occasions… for one win, with Sochaux 2-1, 7 defeats and 2 draws. Maxence, after a bief stop at Guingamp chose to head to Le Nord this season. At 34, he is the only VA player to have played every minute of the opening 12 games of the season.

Nicolas Penneteau also knows all about OL. On 9 occasions with Bastia, he defended his goal. He conceded nine goals in four defeats, four draws and a solitary win. He must be delighted that Juninho will be suspended because the Brazilian has beaten him three times, including his first ever goal in France back in 2002 and the winner in last season’s Coupe de France.

Eric Hassli has played twice against Lyon with Metz, in 2000-01. Results? 2 0-0 draws. Sébastien Roudet played the same number for Nice in 2004-05 for a loss and a draw. Yacine Bezzaz holds the record for the least playing time against OL: just two minutes for Ajaccio in 2004-05 for a 1-1 draw.

Geoffroy Doumeng has two games under his belt from his time at Montpellier, including a loss and the 1-1 draw which handed OL their second domestic crown. And finally Willy Grondin lost 1-0 with Nantes in 2003-04. The sole Lyon player? Sébastien Squillaci defeated VA on penalties while playing for Monaco in the 2003-04 Coupe de France.
