7th straight win for PSV

In Utrecht, Patrices Bergues went to watch OL’s next opponents in the last 16 of the Champions League.

As the home and away clash with Olympique Lyonnias draws coser, PSV Eindhoven seem to have slipped into top gear. Since the turn of the year, Phillip Cocu and his teammates have an impressive record: seven win from seven games. The star of their current good form, the Peruvian Jefferson Farfan keeps underlining his billing as a future star of continental football with every performance. On Wednesday, the 21-year-old scored his 19th and 20th goals of the current campaign as his side won away to FC Utrecht.

For this potentially hazardous trip, Guus Hiddink had decided to change from his habitual game plan, bolstering his midfield and playing just Jefferson Farfan and DaMarcus Beasley up front. A formation he hadn’t yet used in 2006. For his part, Vennegoor of Hesselink started the game on the bench.
After 20 minutes without a chance, André Oijer, largely anonymous in the last game against Roda JC, put through Farfan who gave the Utrecht ‘keeper no chance with his finish. The equaliser from Ramzi, just after the break (48’) made life a little more difficult for Guss Hiddink’ men. The introduction of Vennegoor of Hesselink allowed the side to return to a more familiar formation. In the 78th minute Farfan scored the winner which allowed his side to maintain top spot in the Eredivisie with a three-point lead over Feyenoord and five ahead of Alkmaar.
This Saturday, they host Heracles Almelo, 13th in the standings.

Meanwhile the draw for the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup was held and PSV benefited from the luck that seems to have deserted OL: they will be playing at home, to AZ Alkmaar.
