Les Bretons made a very slow start to the season before slowly changing up through the gears without ever hitting top and their strikers are basically the least prolific in the league…

3 wins at home (Sochaux 2-1, Auxerre 3-1, Nice 1-0), 3 draws (Monaco 1-1, ASSE 0-0, Nancy 0-0), 5 defeats (Lille 2-1 at home, Marseille 2-0, Valenciennes 2-1, Sedan 1-0, PSG 1-0). 9 goals scored: 1 from outside the penalty box, 8 from inside; 3 penalties (Lille, Sochaux, Nice); 2 from centres; 1 from a corner. 3 goals scored in the first half. Monterrubio 3 goals (3 penalties), Utaka and Briand 2, Jeunechamp and Marveaux 1. 12 goals conceded: 2 from outside the area and 10 from within; 1 free-kick (VA); 1 penalty (Sedan); 3 from centres; 1 from a corner; 1 header. 5 goals conceded in the first half and 7 in the second.

21 players have been used by Pierre Dréossi; 4 players have taken part in all 11 league matches: Briand, Bourillon, Pouplin and Hadji. The ‘keeper Pouplin has played every minute of every match. 22 yellow cards: Jeunechamp 4, Bruno Cheyrou 3, M’Bia 3… 1 red card: Bruno Cheyrou.

Bruno Cheyrou, Daniel Moreira, Mario Melchiot and Christophe Revault all arrived this season. Frei, Gourcuff, Källström, Isaksson, Ouaddou… all left! And of course there was a change of coach as well with Dréossi replacing Bölöni.

Les Rennais qualified for the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue; they beat Libourne 2-1 (goals to Briand and Melchiot), and Lille, away, 2-0 after extra-time (goals to Sow and Marveaux).

Monterrubio and Co finished last season 25 points behind Lyon. They lost 3-1 at home before defeating OL at the Stade Gerland 4-1 (hat-trick to Utaka). In the last ten meetings between the two sides at the Stade de la Route de Lorient, they have suffered six defeats, earned two draws and two victories (in 2003-04 and 1996-97).

Last season, Lyon visited Rennes just days after defeating Rosenborg away in the Champions League. 28,998 fans attended the match.
