The Ligue 1 gets underway this weekend for OL. How will the team fare in the opening match of the season? Will the new strikers be able to hit the back of the net straight from the start...?

Over the course of the last 10 seasons, OL have had differing fortunes on the opening day of competition. Pretty mediocre to start with and then quite fantastic :

1999-2000 : OL 1 Montpellier 2
2000-2001 : OL 2 Rennes 2
2001-2002 : Lens 2 OL 0
2002-2003 : Guingamp 3 OL 3
2003-2004 : Lille 1 OL 0

2004-2005: Nice 0 OL 1
2005-2006: Le Mans 1 OL 2
2006-2007: Nantes 1 OL 3
2007-2008: OL 2 Auxerre 0
2008-2009: OL 3 Toulouse 0

During the same period, 4 new strikers scored a goal on their official debut with OL:

1999-2000: Vairelles against Montpellier
2004-2005: Nilmar 2 goals against Rennes
2005-2006: Carew 3 goals in Auxerre during the Champions Trophy match
2005-2006: Fred 2 goals against Monaco.

In the 2003-2004 season, Essien also scored on his official debut, against Auxerre (Champions Trophy).

The French defender Aly Cissokho should make his big debut in the L1 against Le Mans.
