OL have seriously slowed down their rhythm in the L1. They would be well inspired to take all three points against a Rennes side who have made Gerland, over the last four seasons, one of their preferred grounds...
OL - STADE RENNAIS
Stade de Gerland
5 points from the last 5 matches in the Ligue 1, is very little for a title contender who started off with a high ratio (20 points in 8 encounters). However, OL have not been able to take advantage of the situation Bordeaux find themselves in, or stop OM from catching them up. An OL side who have not won, in all competitions, for four matches (3 draws and 1 defeat) ; an OL side who haven’t won at home since the 26th of September against Toulouse (2-1). It is time to get back to winning ways!
Rennes managed to lift themselves up against Le Mans after two defeats in a row. The Bretons have in Gyan a very efficient striker (7 goals) and will soon be able to count on the return of Briand. These Bretons are strong in a number of areas. They know that they are almost playing at home at Gerland, as over the last four seasons they have taken 1 victory and 3 draws. They have what it takes to contiue this run.
OL, defeated on Tuesday night by Fiorentina, will have had four full days in which to prepare this match. Having gotten over their fatigue, Claude Puel’s troops know what they have to do. Could they advance arguments other than the strength of their opponents, and announce potential lapses of concentration, or physical and mental freshness? It would appear not, and that despite the combined absences of players like Toulalan, Clerc, Bodmer… OL even have the chance to pull off a coup in the standings, if Auxerre and Bordeaux were held back by PSG and Nancy.
This league match needs to reset a certain amount of order in the OL camp especially as Claude Puel, disappointed after the match against Grenoble, said he was satisfied by the behaviour and implication of his team against Fiorentina. « I saw my team again … ». It remains for them to win in order to validate this reunion and show their ambition as they go into the final stretch of 2009. Will this be done by bringing something new to the starting line-up? It could happen up front with the presence, or not, at the same time of Lisandro and Gomis, the appearance of Delgado in the starting eleven… The match against Rennes, the start, we hope, of a good run of results before the Christmas break.
