The group phase of the Champions League has finished without the slightest surprise, with all the seeded teams finishing first or second in their groups and qualifying for the round of 16.

Shakhtar Donetsk and Spartak Moscow can quite rightly pride themselves on qualifying for the UEFA Cup despite being the « minnows » of their groups.

The 4 English clubs finish at the top of their group. Spain has three representatives qualifies, as does Italy. France has two teams in the round of 16. The Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Scotland all have one team.

Real seals a draw
In Group E, Dynamo Kiev thought they could hold on to the first victory of their European campaign a Ronaldo double in the dying minutes of regular time allowed to Fabio Capello’s men to wrest a 2-2 draw from the jaws of defeat.

« Man U » fights back
At Old Trafford, the Manchester United players sweated for 45 minutes after Benfica opened the scoring. Pulling back just before half time, the Red Devils accelerated in the second half (3 goals to 1) comfortably secure first place in their group.
In the other Group F match, FC Copenhagen belted the already-qualified Celtic 3-1.

Arsenal and Porto cancel each other out
At the Estadio do Dragao, a draw was enough to qualify both teams for the round of 16. Both sides were happy with this despite Quaresma hitting the post.
Hamburg salvaged some dignity by beating CSKA Moscow 3-2.

Lille pulls it off
Faced with a drastically reshuffled Milan team already assured of top place in the group, Lille became the first French team in history to beat AC Milan on its own ground. Thanks to this victory, in tandem with the AEK’s draw at Anderlecht, Claude Puel’s men hoisted themselves into the round of 16 of the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
