. SUMMARY .

For the opening game of the competition, Bruno Genesio decided to review his team sheet, with nine changes from the line up against Rennes. For their part, Guingamp were not under pressure, close to a month and a half after their victory at the Parc OL in the league (1-3).

Guingamp were the first to strike when they profited from Rybus's loose pass to open the scoring with a left-foot shot from Ludovic Blas (0-1). This twist of fate had a positive effect on Lyon who stepped up their attacks on Salin's goal. After several saves from attempts from Valbuena, Fekir and also Ferri, the Guingamp keeper had to concede defeat two minutes from the break: Fekir took advantage of Sorbon's poor control to win the ball then run into the area to perfectly set up Mathieu Valbuena (1-1). The first half finished amid confusion arising from a dismissed penalty on Nabil Fekir that resulted in Bruno Genesio's being sent off.

In the second half, despite Lyon's domination, Guingamp managed to restore their lead with a goal of pure opportunism from Niil De Pauw in the 71st minute. But, as in the first half, OL dug deep to even the score again with a powerful Alex Lacazette strike resulting from a corner in the 75th minute. Unfortunately, this equaliser wasn't enough to prevent Lyon's elimination: a penalty shootout saw them go down 4-3. Fekir and Valbuena didn't manage to convert after successful shots from Mammana, Jallet and Lacazette.

. TURNING POINT .

Neither defence came to the party

There are some night like this where the teams pay each other courtesies. Such was the case in this encounter where, first of all, the first two goals of the match resulted from two howling defensive errors. Firstly, there was a simple pass up the line from Maciej Rybus in the 20th minute that put the ball on a plate for Ludovic Blas. But the Guingamp defense, and in particular Julien Sorbon, let OL back into the game just before the break. Sorbon tripped over to let Nabil Fekir set up Mathieu Valbuena for the equaliser. In the second half, it was the keepers who allowed the forwards to shoot. In the 70th minute Mathieu Gorgelin, unfortunately, could only divert Deaux's shot... into the path of De Pauw, then, two minutes later, Romain Salin misjudged his reach for a corner and Alex Lacazette made the most of the loose ball to get OL back into the match.

. THE STAT .

4

Despite his missed penalty, Mathieu Valbuena was among the best on the field on Wednesday night. The Lyon number 19 had most of his team's shots in this round-of-16 Coupe de la Ligue fixture and he also spurred Lyon's comeback after EA Guingamp's opener. His tireless effort was rewarded with an equaliser just before the break, his fourth goal in his last five games. Already decisive against PSG, Nantes and Rennes, Mathieu Valbuena has confirmed his return to the big stage. Good news ahead of Sunday night's clash in Monaco.

Jérémy Berthod:

"We set off in this competition with high amibitions and the final at Parc OL in our sights, but unfortunately we were eliminated after equalising twice. We deserved better even if we lacked that little flash of inspiration needed to swing the match our way. Once more we've lost in a penalty shootout. It's a bit of a Lyon curse."
