OL will be back in Champions League action as of next week – their 8th consecutive participation in the world’s premier club competition. For the last 4 seasons, they have begun with a positive result… and they have also won in the league matches directly before their continental fixtures…

On Saturday, the 6-time champions of France will travel to Metz for round 8 of the L1 season. The last time OL had an away match directly before kicking off their European campaign dates back to 2004-05: Rennes 1-2 OL before hosting Manchester United in a 2-2 draw. In 2002-03, the Olympiens lost to Nantes before going down 2-1 against Ajax. With the exception of these 2 away games, OL has always played at home before their first Champions League tie of the season. Here’s a quick look back since OL’s historic first Champions League season in 2000-01.

2000-01: OL 3 Lens 0 (September 9); OL 3 Heerenveen 1 (September 12)
2001-02: OL 4 Nantes 1 (September 15); OL 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1 (September 18)
2002-03: Nantes 1 OL 0 (September 14); Ajax 2 OL 1 (September 17)
2003-04: OL 1 Auxerre 1 (September 13); OL 1 Anderlecht 0 (September 17)
2004-05: Rennes 1 OL 2 (September 11); OL 2 Manchester 2 (September 15)

2006-07: OL 2 Troyes 0 (September 9): OL 2 Real Madrid 0 (September 13)

Only one side has jinxed OL: FC Nantes.
