Bruno Genesio’s offsider, Gérald Baticle, and his players shared their thoughts with the OLTV mic after their four-nil win over Strasbourg in the first week of the Ligue 1 season.
“The way all the players worked defensively is the greatest satisfaction. We didn’t really do that last season. We won a lot of contested balls high up the pitch thanks to the forwards’ efforts… We’re happy with the result and how we kept possession, but not for the entire match. We’ve found what we’ve been looking for. You have to work hard on a physical level to see a match out. We had a bit of a half-hearted phase in this match. We started off well but we needed to keep it going. We slacked off the pace at the start of the second half, we were a bit downbeat for about ten minutes… But we created well, there were plenty of chances. That’s important for Mariano, for his confidence. He opened his account, he’s on his way. He played well, particularly in the air. Fekir underlined his current good form.”
“It was important to win this first league match. We managed to score four goals without conceding, so that’s good. We’re still unsure about how the other forwards will go, we’ll see. But this performance bodes well. We all enjoyed ourselves tonight, that’s the most important thing… It does our confidence good on a personal level.”
“Tonight’s been really good. We still got a bit of a fright at the end, though. But we managed to avoid conceding. Everyone put in a shift. There are still a lot of matches to go and we need to repeat this performance. We were pretty tight defensively. We enjoyed the game tonight. We still need to lift a bit for the next match.”
“We’re very happy even if we didn’t get everything right. We still need to perfect a few things. But it’s pretty good for our first match back. The new guys did well. We played a decent match.”
“To get off to a winning start is just what we needed. It feels great to play here in my new colours. I was warmly welcomed. My game in the air is one of my fortes. Wherever I’ve gone, I’ve scored. I had my sights set on scoring, but I didn’t let on about it (laughs).”
