Les Lyonnais on international duty

Lyon had several players involved in midweek international football this week. Here’s how they went...

2 players were with the France Espoirs (Berthod, Clément); 5 with the Under-19 squad (Ben Arfa, Benzema, Beynié, Riou and Paillot); 5 in the French senior side (Coupet, Clerc, Abidal, Wiltord and Malouda); 1 with Senegal (Diatta); 1 with Switzerland (Müller); 3 with Brazil (Juninho, Fred and Cris). Tiago (ankle) and Carew (vaccinations) didn’t play with their respective countries.

Berthod played the entire match and Clément, the second half, replacing Mavuba, against Slovakia: victory 2-1.

The Under-19 team beat the Ukraine 2-0 in Montélimar with all five Olympians playing their part.

Raymond Domenech didn’t start a single Lyonnais for the senior side’s match against Slovakia. Wiltord and Malouda played all of the second half. Malouda had two shots at goal and also delivered a superb pass for Henry who failed to finish. He also earned the penalty and gave away the free-kick that brought Slovakia’s second goal. Wiltord scored the penalty, his 25th international goal. Abidal replaced Silvestre in the 62 minute. Coupet and Clerc remained on the bench.

In Moscow, Brazil defeated Russia 1-0. Cris, Juninho and Fred were all introduced in the second half. Cris played the entire second 45 minutes... without his mask... after replacing Juan. Juninho replaced Kaka in the 70th minute and Fred came in for Ronaldo on the hour mark.

Senegal’s Diatta beat Norway 2-1 in Dakar. The winning goal was scored by Ajaccio’s Moussa N’Diaye.

Switzerland beat Scotland 3-1. Patrick Müller did not play.
