How do OL get on in the fifth match of the group stage?


In the last four editions of the competition OL have been unbeaten in match 5. The last defeat dates back to the 2004-2005 season and a 2-1 defeat away to Manchester United, however, OL had already qualified.

This fifth match of the group stage often decides rewards or disappointments.

Among these matches, certain have been very important, like the game against Fiorentina in the 2008-2009 season, where a success guaranteed OL’s qualification. On the other hand in the 2001-2002 season, defeat at the hands of Barcelona (2-3) ruined OL’s chances before the final group stage match against Leverkusen.


The following season, the defeat at Gerland, 2-0, against Ajax seriously embarrased Sonny Anderson and his team-mates before the trip to Rosenborg where a draw relegated the French champions to the UEFA Cup.


In the 2007-2008 season, a 2-2 home draw against Barcelona meant that Lyon had to win away to Glasgow Rangers in order to qualify for the last 16 of the competition.


The two matches against Madrid in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 were very special moments, summits in the group stage to see who would take first place. OL managed it, remaining unbeaten.

OL version 2009-2010 have the opportunity to join the OL of Gérard Houllier if they managed to bring back a positive result from Tuscany before a possible victory over Debrecen.
