OL answers League President THIRIEZ

Published on the 08 November 2006 à 19:23

The president of Olympique Lyonnais, Jean-Michel AULAS, has met comments made by the president of the League with surprise, after Frédéric Thiriez said: ‘I didn’t get the impression that Rennes’ victory was the result of a LFP plot or due to the French media being against OL...’

This is a strange thing to have said considering that OL was the first to salute Rennes’ quality and deserved victory, and never spoke of any sort of ‘plot’, but rather pointed out several examples that do not correspond to practising professional sport at the highest level.

- Is it not abnormal to start a professional league season and deliberately deprive a club of its World Cup players, allowed holidays as the regulations demand?

- Is it a sign of the League’s European ambitions to deny Olympique Lyonnais and Lille the opportunity to play their league match on the Friday evening considering they have Champions League fixtures on the following Tuesday? Is it normal to arbitrarily advance OL – Valenciennes to Friday night, without asking either club, just because there is a rugby match scheduled for the Saturday evening?

- Why refuse to allow both Sedan – OL and Sochaux – Lille to be played concurrently on the Saturday afternoon to allow the two clubs to best prepare for Champions League matches on the Tuesday?

Olympique Lyonnais appreciates the portrait of ‘a great champion’ drawn by Frédéric THIRIEZ. OL has confidence that he is the great president that French football needs, especially to make Ligue 1 as attractive as possible, a league that can count on its best players, and also to help them perform as well as possible in European competition.
