OL need to recharge the batteries!

OL looked tired as they went down to Sochaux on the weekend... they limited the damage on the league ladder... and hopes to use the international break to recuperate after a busy run...

It's hard to keep playing every three or four days, with flat batteries, an opponent whose desire and motivation is at its summit, and you have a bad habit of offering gifts to your opposition... Obviously, almost everything is linked. OL head into the international break on the back of a loss, just as it was after the trip to the Parc des Princes. In this latest series of seven matches in three weeks, the seven-time French champions showed their current limits by repeating certain errors.

Over the long term, it's impossible to perform without Lisandro and Bastos; with Lovren and Grenier unavailable… Squad turnover is not an option and those coming back from long-term lay-offs, don't get the chance they need to rest. They have been obliged to keep on playing and that has resulted in a drop in form with Gomis, Cris, Gourcuff… It's not easy to give young, inexperienced players much playing time in the first team.

But that doesn't explain everything. You could think that after conceding so many goals from set pieces, lessons would be learned. Not yet! 54% of goals against have come from set pieces - that's too many, especially when a lack of concentration is the number one offender in these passages of play. During these tough times, OL couldn't, or rarely, rely on its passing game to circumvent the Sochaux pressing. There were too many mistakes, and yet the feeling was that OL had the potential to cause Sochaux problems, as Richert admitted after the game.

In this worst performance of the season (?), Lloris, once again, saved everything he possibly could. And Lacazette showed he has a huge potential, while Kim Källström worked tirelessly in the middle of the park to get things moving.

OL left Sochaux with a loss for the first time in eight seasons! Fortunately, Montpellier, LOSC and PSG all only took one point which limited the damage. But look out behind where OM are now just five points behind... This international break will do wonders for the sore, tired bodies, the mental fatigue and the injuries. Recharge those batteries before important games against Rennes and Ajax… direct rivals in Ligue 1 and the Champions League...
