OL-OM: a match of legend

A look back on one of the events which marked 2009...

All of the spectators who left Gerland, on that night, 10 minutes before the final whistle must surely have a mixture of regrets and remorse when they say « I was there ». On Sunday the 8th of November 2009, OM were up 3-2 in the 79th minute and OL seemed to be heading towards their second defeat of the season at Gerland. Ten minutes later, five more goals had transformed what was, up until then, a match between two contenders for the title, certainly rich in goals, into a match of legend (5 – 5). For more than 25 years the Ligue 1 had not experienced such attacking euphoria, and the suspense on top of it!

 

 

At half time, we had started to believe that something was on the cards (2 -2). Pjanic and Govou had already magnificently set the tone, but more than anything it was the epilogue that sent the match ballistic. Five minutes before the end of the match, or five minutes after the fourth OM goal, two goals from Lisandro brought OL back level, before an incredible stoppage time period which would see the Lyon players oscillate between euphoria (goal by Bastos) and disappointment (own goal from Toulalan) before finally accepting a share of the points which kept them just one point behind the leaders Bordeaux. « CRAZY! » titled L’Equipe the next day.
