OL's women are at home to the Russians of FC Rossiyanka at Gerland (16h00) in the last 16 return leg of the Champions League, after a 6-1 victory in the first leg.
Unfortunate finalists last season, the OL players have the opportunity to win their invitation to the spring of Europe competition for the fourth consecutive year. The Lyon women have grown with their experiences, and the best way to prove it would address this last 16 return match with utmost seriousness: "We must remain cautious and respect our public. We have an obligation to put in a good performance to stay on our winning momentum before the home game against Montpellier" insists Patrice Lair.
The Lyon coach probably remembers that first leg last week in the north of Moscow, FC Rossiyanka had caused some problems to his players before sinking defensively. At Krasnoarmeysk, the ultra offensive tactics of the Russians showed their limitations against an irresistible Lotta Schelin. The Swedish striker had gobbled up space as she likes to do at the Stade Gerland to afford a decisive four goals. Camille Abily and Louisa Necib had taken care to perfect the OL advantage of OL despite a reduction of the score from the Nigerian Emueje Oghiabevha.
After this 6-1 success, we cannot imagine the Lyon side failing to qualify. The challenge is both to give a beautiful image of women's football, and best prepare for the reception of Montpellier on Sunday at 15:00 at the Stade Gerland. Success in these two encounters would allow them to head into the winter with a little balm to the heart, for a team that has not lacked any for the moment. With 10 victories in as many official matches played already, and a whopping 55 goals scored...
