Patrice Bergues: “No question of our ignoring a match”

After morning training, Patrice Bergues had a few thoughts on OL’s trip to the Chaudron to face Saint-Etienne in a few days.

The OL staff was in high spirits this morning, and with good reason: the entire squad was present, as no injuries remain. Training this morning finished with several small exercises. Joël Bats worked with Grégory Coupet on hitting the crossbar from halfway. Meanwhile, Kim Källström took many shots to get 3 free kicks past… Patrice Bergues, the stand-in keeper for the duration of the exercise. The assistant coach won the bet and had these words to say on the week’s first training session: “It was a good session’s work. After 2 days of rest, it was clear we needed to work hard to prepare for the derby and the Roma game just afterwards. So it was a pretty tough training session to get back in the swing,” explained “Pat” before continuing, “We’re preparing for a group of upcoming matches, we’re not focusing simply on the derby. Our aim is to be ready for the next 2matches, not just the one on Saturday.”
This match is also a question of “pride” for Patrice Bergues, who is coming up to his 4th derby in the OL colours. “It’s all about the passion of the derby and the desire top defend one’s colours. There’s no hatred! No violence! There’s no place for those things in sport.” Saturday’s game promises to be a terrific clash between 1st and 5th on the table. “St-Etienne are having a great season. They had a rough patch a while ago but the result they got in Paris proved they are quality. They have a tougher time at home… and we’ll try to make the most of it.”

While the news is good for the side that will face Les Verts on the weekend, at only 3 days from the return leg of the Champions League against Roma, Patrice Bergues affirms that there is no question of taking this derby match lightly: “We don’t cut corners, because every match is important in our eyes. There’s no question of our ignoring a match, such behaviour isn’t worthy of Olympique Lyonnais.”
