Gérard Houllier has retained a squad of 18 players to host Sochaux on Saturday. Wiltord and Benzema rejoin the squad.
Coupet, Vercoutre – Abidal, Berthod, Clerc, Cris, Müller, Réveillère – Fabio Santos, Juninho, Källström, Toulalan, Malouda, Baros, Ben Arfa, Benzema, Fred, Wiltord
There are some notable returns to the squad. Is this good news?
“Wiltord and Benzema are back on the team sheet without playing first in the CFA. We don’t really have time to wait for that because they represent 2 extra attacking options for the visit of Roma in a few days.
As for Squillaci, Diarra, Govou, Tiago, Caçapa, Rémy and Hartock, they will train on Saturday morning.”
What is your feeling about the match in Rome on Wednesday night?
The away leg was a good match of football. We have to keep in mind the quality of the opposition. Not everyone can keep a clean sheet against Roma at the Olimpico. We had to be very solid and stick together not to succumb to the attacking power of Totti, Pizarro, and Perrotta… In getting the 0-0 draw, we kept our chances of qualification alive.”
And now Sochaux…
“We want to take another step towards our number 1 objective. It’s an important match, worth more than 3 points given what’s at stake. In terms of confidence and quality, this match, our last at home before the visit of Roma, is a good preparation for that return clash on March 6. Each game we play will give us something extra for the big match.
It’s important to play a good game against Sochaux, which is ranked 4th, because the title is won with victories over direct rivals.”
Have the players recuperated well since your return from Rome?
“What I can tell you is they will be very fresh. The players are well physically. Rome left no marks on us and what counts now is desire. Only those with drive and enthusiasm succeed.”
