Powerless, Lyon lost 3-0 to Schalke 04. Despite this result, Tel Aviv's victory over Benfica means that OL qualify for the last 16 of the competition.
It was with the ambition to win their ticket to the knockout stages of the Champions League that OL travelled to Gelsenkirchen.
The start of the encounter was very well balanced, the first real chance coming from Huntelaar who placed a header just over the bar following a corner (8’). The Germans opened the scoring through Farfan who picked up the ball in the box and fired home with a left foot effort (13’). Lyon retaliated through Lisandro but his shot was too weak to worry Neuer (17’). Just as they started to push on, the Olympians were punished by a counter attack finished off by Huntelaar (20’). The first period began to look suspiciously like the one at Benfica three weeks earlier. Raul even allowed himself to attempt a clever lob on Hugo Lloris (31’). A few minutes later Farfan collapsed in the penalty area but the referee was not fooled and sanctioned the Schalke 04 striker. Despite some dangerous actions, Claude Puel’s players failed to worry the German goalkeeper.
At the break, Claude Puel decided to replace Aly Cissokho, who was not at his advantage, with Bafé Gomis. Thus, Bastos slipped back a notch to left back. After a promising start to the second period, OL were soon deprived of the services of Yoann Gourcuff who suffered a severe tackle (56’). Felix Magath's players valiantly defended their advantage and blocked Lyon. Kim Källström still managed to procure a chance but his off balance attempt was off target. The long balls towards Bafé Gomis at no time put the German defenders at risk. Instead it would be Huntelaar who hammered in a final nail, breaking past the OL defence in the final minute of play before slotting past Hugo Lloris with a little bit of luck. In stoppage time, Gomis came up short against Neuer before the referee whistled the end of the encounter, a match which will not remain a great memory for OL. Despite everthing, Tel Aviv’s win over Benfica sent OL into the next round.
