The Lyon squad for PSG

Published on the 24 October 2006 à 15:55 by R.B

Gérard Houllier has named an 18-man squad for the visit of Paris Saint-Germain including Rémy, Cacapa, Berthod and Ben Arfa… Abidal and Malouda are missing along with Juninho, Fred, Müller and Coupet…

The squad:
Vercoutre, Hartock – Réveillère, Clerc, Cacapa, Cris, Squillaci, Berthod, Toulalan, Tiago, Källström, Diarra, Ben Arfa, Govou, Wiltord, Benzema, Carew, Rémy

Gérard, will we see a new-look team for the match against PSG?
Not really. The only player I’m resting is Abidal. The others are unavailable. Cacapa and Carew? It’s a long time that neither has played, but they’ve been training. Football is like riding a bike... you don’t forget how to do it. There won’t be many changes to the Marseille game, apart from, obviously, the left side.

The Coupe de la Ligue?
It’s a competition like all the others: We’re playing to win. We have to maintain our winning habit. It’s very important to maintain are current trajectory. I’ve already used the entire squad. At Lyon it’s very important not to make errors, you have to put everything you can on your side of the coin, and that comes from winning matches. Our aim is to win every match we play. We won’t miss it, even if you have the slightest weakness, we’ll find it. PSG on Wednesday? We’ll be there to win. There’s no question of taking the foot off the accelerator. Home matches are no more difficult than away matches, even if our opponents probably defend more at the Stade Gerland.

How do you replace Fred?
With Carew and Benzema. I will use the two players and they will both be very handy. Freshness will be important. Fred will be missing 13 matches. Wiltord in the middle? That’s not the first option, I need him elsewhere. There are Govou and Rémy who can both play in two different roles and there’s also Bettiol… I also, obviously have to look at who compliments who as well.

Can Lyon keep improving?
We can always get better. The trick is to want to. Ideally we should be able to reproduce our performance against Marseille, nine times out of ten. We are still learning. Continuing to learn will help us in the long run. We also have to avoid relaxing, but that is not our style anyway.
