The one that got away

OL went down 2-1 to PSG in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue. Les Lyonnais went behind early before looking to fight back in the second half, but only managed to pull one goal back. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to add another trophy to the cabinet...A shame...

Just week after their last meeting, Les Lyonnais and Parisiens were back together again. Looking for their first League Cup crown since 2001, Rémi Garde went with another new-look team. Still without the services of Fofana, Grenier and Gourcuff, the Lyon coach was also without Ferri, suspended. Tolisso took his place in midfield. Malbranque inherited the playmaking responsibilities.

Les Lyonnais surprised…

The Coupe de la Ligue arrived via helicopter, and the OL supporters hoped it would be leaving in a plane for Lyon. It was a lively start… before PSG dealt the first blow. Down the left, Maxwell chipped Lopes for Cavani to open the scoring. Four minutes in and OL were chasing the game. Gomis had a chance moments later, into the side netting. Les Lyonnais came again and the striker, perfectly set up, headed straight at Douchez. It was end to end stuff as the two sides traded blows. Lopes then produced a wonderful save to deny a bullet volley from Cavani.

…OL overrun

It was an entertaining start as both sides looked to attack. PSG then began to impose their passing game and the intensity dropped away. Then suddenly Paris attacked... From a long ball over the top, Lopes caught Lucas. The referee pointed to the spot, even though the contact looked outside the area. Cavani doubled the mark from the spot. Five minutes later the Parisian attacker could have had a hat-trick, but his got under his shot. After a promising start, Les Lyonnais struggled to get close to the Paris goal. They headed to half-time two goals down... Now they had nothing to lose...

Hope from Lacazette

At the start of the second half, it was still hard to upset the Paris defence. Briand replaced Dabo. Cause and effect? It matters little... Lacazette picked up possession and let fly from 20 metres. Douchez couldn't reach it. Les Olympiens had renewed hope. There was half an hour left to play, 30 minutes to find an equaliser.  Fekir came on. There were fewer and fewer chances at either end.

The equaliser never materialised

Les Lyonnais were growing in confidence. They needed to throw everything at the Parisians in the final 15 minutes. Lacazette found Fekir in the area, but his shot found the outside of the side netting. PSG wound down the clock... On the counterattack, Ménez failed to kill the game off. One last chance was blocked by Douchez. The Coupe de la Ligue would remain in Paris.
