first team / OL - LOSC

A bad day at the office for OL

Published on the 29 November 2017 à 21:08 by SC

Despite a stunning finish in which they went desperately close to equalising, OL suffered a second defeat of the season, 2-1 at home to Lille, that sees them drop to third on the Ligue 1 ladder after 15 matches of the season.

15’. Memphis shoots off target.
20’. Diakhaby heads just wide from a corner.
21’. Mendes scores with a curling left-foot effort. 0-1.
36’. Mariano equalises with a header after good work from Ndombele. 1-1.
40’. Ponce headers Lille back in front from Malcuit's cross. 1-2.
54’. Superb control and then incredible miss from Memphis.
56’. Penalty for Lyon after foul on Cornet… but Fekir's spot kick is saved by Maignan.
64’. Mendes with an incredible miss from just a few centimetres out from goal…
79’. Cornet's shot blocked by a defender.
85’. Huge goal-mouth scramble in front of the Lille goal.
87’. Fekir's shot turned onto the crossbar by Maignan.

Lyon came into the game in great form and a series of wins - barring the scoreless draw with Montpellier - while their opponents Lille have just changed coach and were struggling in the relegation zone. But things didn't go according to plan. After 20 minutes in freezing conditions, Mendes stepped on the accelerator to end Lopes' run of 672 minutes without conceding a goal in all competitions. Despite not hitting top gear, OL equalised through Mariano, who out-jumped everyone. But the fight-back didn't really materialise. A few seconds later, OL were caught out again when Ponce headed Lille back in front. OL scored with their only shot on target in the first half and trailed at the break for the first time this season.

Marçal and Cornet were introduced at half-time. And a third change quickly followed when Diakhaby was forced off with injury and replaced by Yanga-Mbiwa. Les Lyonnais looked more ambitious after the restart. Cornet earned a penalty that Fekir failed to put away. Sick last weekend, the OL skipper was out of rhythm, a recurrent theme in the Lyon ranks. OL pushed hard for a ate equaliser, but a miracle, the LOSC 'keeper and the crossbar saved the Lille goal. OL's luck had turned and the undefeated run came to an end as OM stole into second place.

Incredible chances

Without really causing too much danger to the Lille goal for the best part of an hour, the Lyon attack came to life for the final 3à minutes. Memphis had a great chance and Fekir failed from the penalty spot in the 55th minute set the tone as the shots rained down on the Lille goal. Trailing 2-1, Bruno Genesio's side threw everything at the visitors, but it just wouldn't go in... Memphis, Fekir and Mariano just couldn't find the equaliser... incredible!

Two and a half months after their only other loss of the season, Lille inflicted just a second loss of the campaign on Bruno Genesio's men. Before this match, Les Lyonnais had lost just once all season, in all competitions. It was on 17 September at the Parc des Princes in Week 6 of the Ligue 1 season and a 2-0 loss, courtesy of two own-goals. The loss to Lille ended a run of 12 matches undefeated. After 20 games this season (15 in L1, 5 in the Europa League), Bruno Genesio's men have won 11, drawn 7 and lost 2. It was also the first home defeat in Ligue 1 since 23 April and a 2-1 loss to Monaco (9 matches - 5 wins, 4 draws).

Jérémy Berthod:
"Tonight was disappointing. But we saw from the outset that it wasn't going to be our night. It didn't look like the normal invincible OL. The team also lacked a little physical freshness. The players seemed tired. Too many players didn't play to their true standard. Lille made the most of their opportunities. We tried to fightback but it was already too late - it needed to come earlier. It's a shame because we really wanted to go on with it because we have a good run of matches between now and Christmas with plenty of winnable matches."
