A look at Paris-SG

After OM, it’s time for Paris-SG this Wednesday…in the Coupe de la Ligue. The Parisians have been one of the disappointments of the French season to date…

Just 12 points from ten league matches; 13th place in the league standings; 12 goals scoreed, including 6 by Pauleta and 13 conceded. 3 wins (Lille 1-0, Monaco 2-1 and Sedan 4-2), 3 draws (Valenciennes 0-0, Nancy 0-0 and Auxerre 0-0) and 4 defeats (Lorient 3-2, Sochaux 3-2, Marseille 3-1, St-Etienne 1-0)… 8 points dropped at home…

Pauleta 6 buts, Frau 2, Pancrate 1, Hellebuyck 1, Rozehnal 1, Yepes 1). Very average results; the Dhorasoo Affair; the penalties against Yepes; the suspension of Frau; the injuries to Rothen; the trouble fitting in for new signings Baning, Hellebuyck, Diané… that’s a lot. 21 players have been used by Guy Lacombe.

Les Parisiens lost on penalties at the Stade Gerland on July 30 in the Trophée des Champions. They have qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Cup and drew 0-0 with Rapid Bucharest in their opening match last Thursday. In the Coupe de la Ligue, they defeated Lorient, 3-1 in the last 32 (Pauleta x 2 and Pancrate).

The Coupe de la Ligue has been won twice by PSG: in 1995, 2-0 versus Bastia and in 1998, 2-2 against Bordeaux. They lost 2-0 to Gueugnon in 2000. In 1995, ’97 and ’98, PSG and OL clashed with the capital club winning twice (in 1995, 2-1 in the last 16 and again in 1998, 1-0 in the last 32) at the Parc des Princes and one Olympian win back in 1997 at Gerland, 2-1 in the last 32.
