Valenciennes returned to Ligue 1 this season after a long absence. The last season in France’s top flight was in 1992-93. Currently 14th after Week 12, they have only registered a solitary point from their six away matches to date…

Twelve players in the squad had never played L1 football before this summer! The entire squad has only played 745 matches between them and 379 of those are the property of Penneteau and Flachez. Sixteen of the current squad were a part of last season’s promotion-winning side. VA didn’t go overboard in the summer transfer market with Penneteau, Roudet, Haddad and Bratu comprising the principle recruits.

14 points from 12 rounds with four wins (Rennes 3-1, Nantes 1-0, Bordeaux 3-0 and Troyes 3-1), 2 draws (Auxerre 1-1 and PSG 0-0), 6 losses (Le Mans 3-2, Lens 3-0, Nice 2-0, Toulouse 3-0, Lorient 1-0 and Lille 3-0). They have scored 12 goals and conceded 18. Away from home thay have recorded one draw and five defeats (3 goals scored and 13 conceded).

Antoine Kombouaré has used 23 joueurs. Flachez, Mater, Doumeng and Bratu have participated in all 12 matchs. The former Lyon player Flachez has played every one of the 1,080 minutes of the season to date. 23 yellow cards: Rippert 4, Paauwe 3… 3 red cards: Chelle 1, Saez 1 and Rippert 1.

Valenciennes were eliminated from the Coupe de la Ligue in the round-of-32 by Monaco (0-0 and 5-4 on penalties).

Friday’s match will be the 24th time the two sides have met at the Stade Gerland: 12 Lyon wins, 9 draws and 2 VA wins (1965-66 and 1977-78).
