An exciting time

After qualifying for the last-16 of the Champions League, OL followed up with a 1-0 win away to Lorient in Ligue 1... Analysis...

From the trip to Brittany, one stat stands out: Les Lyonnais have recorded 4 consecutive victories in four very different contexts. First of all the team had to overcome the disappointing draw with Ajax when they travelled to Auxerre. Before tackling AJA, OL were sitting seven points adrift of PSG and Montpellier and OL were 'dead certs for the Europa League'. Result: 3-2 win. Against TFC, a brilliantly organised and disciplined team: 3-2 win, after leading 3-0. And then the unimaginable scenario of Dinamo Zagreb before this win on the artificial pitch at Lorient.

4 matches with injuries, returns and coach's choices. This run has shown the squad's mental strength. It has shown off the collective qualities. It has also shown the squad's depth when everyone is available. Always the same formation (4-2-3-1), but each time with different personnel.

OL got going again in the championship and qualified for the last-16 of the UCL. We welcomed, or welcomed back, Fofana, Gonalons, Lisandro, Bastos, Gourcuff, Gomis, Lacazette, Ederson, Dabo... We welcomed, or welcomed back, more control in matches, better balance and a desire to work for each other and even a little luck when it was needed...

OL did it all through hard work and by staying solid. It was reassuring that they can travel, notably to the end of the year, to look for the points that will see them climb back into the top three. After qualifying in both the Coupe de la Ligue and the Champions League, the first half of the season will have met all the objectives, after threatening to go off the rails. There are two matches left before the team can head off for Christmas with a big smile for a job well done!
