In great form during the first half, OL fell asleep in the second. We will, however, retain this victory snatched in the dying seconds by Lisandro Lopez.
Lyon travelled to the Mosson for the Week 16 Ligue 1 match. The recent storms did not help out with pitch conditions in Montpellier.
Despite everything Claude Puel’s players managed to hit the target in the opening minutes. Michel Bastos sent a cross to the back post where Lisandro catapulted the ball into the back of the net (5’). Dernis tried in vain to put his team back on level terms but his shot spun just past the post (8’). The duo Bastos-Licha tried their luck again at the quarter hour mark, but this time the Argentine messed up his attempt. Montpellier gradually pulled their heads above water but the OL defence was imperial. Bafé Gomis failed to hit Girard’s players KO with header which flew straight into the gloves of Jourdren (37’). The first half was dealt with seriously and well-controlled by Lyon.
Aggressiveness picked up a notch in the second half. Hugo Lloris was put to work having to push away a free-kick from Dernis. Subsequently, Michel Bastos was not spared by the Montpellier players who multiplied the big fouls on him. Mr. Bré began logically to bring out the yellow cards. The players of the Paillade began to lay siege to the OL goal. Hugo Lloris pulled off two fantastic saves from Ait Fana then a volley from Giroud (71’). Unfortunately the Lyon keeper was powerless against the diving header at the far post from Spahic following a corner by Ait Fana (80’). While we were heading straight towards a draw, a harmless cross from Kolodziejczak was poorly negotiated by the Montpellier rearguard and Lisandro took advantage to send a left foot shot home (94’). Claude Puel's players showed great strength of character by winning in the final seconds of play.
