Disciplined and focused, Olympique Lyonnais registered a commanding 3-0 away win over Auxerre on Sunday in Ligue 1, putting an end to a negative series of results...
After consecutive L1 defeats and then a scoreless Champions League draw at home to Ajax, OL were looking to bounce back against Auxerre. Rémi Garde made some changes to his side, dropping Bafétimbi Gomis and Yoann Gourcuff starting the match on the bench with Gueida Fofana and Ederson present in the middle of the park.
The OL starting XI at kick-off read: Lloris, Réveillère, Cris, Lovren, Cissokho, Fofana, Källström, Briand, Ederson, Bastos, Lisandro.
The two sides began the match in conservative fashion, but the Bastos-Ederson duo led the way for the visitors, with the latter, creating a shooting chance in the box, only to screw his shot wide (7').
Ederson, who was finding space between the lines, slid the ball to Lisandro Lopez who powerful shot was denied by Sorin (17'). Disciplined and focused, Les Gones were soon to be rewarded as Michel Bastos delivered a glorious cross for Lisandro's diving header with nestled into the back of the net (20'). A few minutes later, Oliech, brought down by Lovren, could have had a penalty for the home side, but the referee, Monsieur Piccirillo, didn't blow for the spot kick (23'). On the half hour mark, OL were enjoying 63% possession. Hugo Lloris still had to make another important save from Alain Traore's free-kick (32'). Rémi Garde's side finished the first half in total control of proceedings.
In the second half, Auxerre had another huge chance to get back in the game, but Hengbart's header from a corner flashed just wide of the mark (50'). The match was then stopped for a few minutes when a banner in the crowd commenting on the referees was spotted by the man in the middle. Les Gones could have put the match to bed on the counterattack, but Michel Bastos lost his one-on-one with Sorin (66'). Lisandro's effort was then tackled in extremis after being released by Jimmy Briand. The Argentine then made up for that miss. Takig off on the limit of offside, Licha dummied both his defender and the AJA 'keeper before planting the ball in the back of the net (69'). Oliech led the charge for Fournier's side, but his effort crashed off Hugo Lloris' crossbar (73'). Michel Bastos then finished the job, beating Sorin when clean through on goal (88'). The final whistle ensuring that PSG got back to winning ways in the best possible manner with a deserved 3-0 victory.
