Bafétimbi Gomis was presented to the Press this afternoon in the presence of Jean-Michel Aulas, Bernard Lacombe and Claude Puel. The former Saint-Etienne player has signed a five year contract with OL.
I’m very happy to be at Lyon. The welcome here was great and I’d like to thank the President and staff for their faith in me. I made the choice to step up a level, it was the right choice and there is the challenge that attracted me as well. Bernard Lacombe was a great forward here and he will be able to give the advice that will help me be a success. I came here to help OL win their L1 title back. OL are one of the top six or seven clubs in Europe. I’ve wanted to come here for a while but it wasn’t possible until now.
The World Cup? I’m thinking about it, just like any professional player, but I am focused on the results of my club. Lyon have a great squad with a lot of internationals so if we are in good form things will come naturally.
The rivalry? With all the respect that I have for Saint-Etienne, they are not boxing in the same category. I made a choice based on sporting possibilities, a choice that you do not refuse. My agent (Alain Cavéglia) told be nothing but good about the club and all it did for him. This choice is about my evolution.
We had been thinking about this transfer for a long time. We are not obliged to disclose all of our transfer targets, when it becomes public knowledge negociations are a lot more difficult. We tried to sign the player a few years back when Gérard Houllier was in charge. We spoke about the possibility when Claude arrived last season. We have been very discreet, but that doesn’t mean that we made our minds up on the throw of a dice, this transfer was well thought out. We are delighted to welcome Bafé Gomis to OL.
We were looking for a centre-forward with different qualities to those that we already possessed. Baffé is an anchor man and can cause a lot of problems to a defence, so he is thge player we were looking for. Do I have any advice for him? Score a lot of goals and be efficient. It will not be difficult for him to fit in, in the dressing room.
Bafé is player who combines power and great technique. His style is one that we did not have within the squad. He is capable of finding space behind the defence, breaking past them and bringing a very physical style of play. He works very hard and is open. He will fit into the squad very well and we will welcome him with open arms.
