Ferland Mendy: "I've improved a lot and am looking forward to getting even better this season"

After a breakout first season with OL, the 23-year-old left back is going full throttle into the new campaign in order to reach new levels of success during 2018-19.

The summer break

« The holidays were really helpful. We were able to rest well. Last season we played every three days, and it will be the same this upcoming season, so it's a steady pace. Getting a bit of rest doesn’t hurt. »

An intense preseason

« Everything is going well. We want to prepare well and be ready for the start of the championship in August. That’s the goal. But that’s not the part I like the most. We need to play more games during training so that I enjoy it a bit more. I’m like all other footballers I think (smiles). We did ball work very early on, soon after the recovery phase, so we got the sensations back rather quickly. It's a good thing, even though we have run a lot as well. »

Thoughts on his first season

« For a first season at a new club, I played a lot of matches in Ligue 1. Overall I had a good season, but there is still a lot to improve in my game. I’m looking forward to this season to confirm what I’ve done but especially to erase the negatives and progress in some areas. I have already improved in many aspects of my game over the past season… At Le Havre, I had some positioning gaps, I changed some things in that aspect, although there is still room for improvement. I hope to do it this season.»

Ambitions for the new season

« I'm already very excited about the Champions League. For any player, this competition represents something very special. It is the highest level of European football. In general terms, I want to have a great season personally, but collectively as well. »

Nabil Fekir news

« Yes, we have lots of news from Nabil. We try to keep in touch and give him lots of support for the World Cup… I'm glad to see him give everything when he gets on the pitch. We would have liked for him to play a little more because he deserves it... but I’m not the coach (smiles). It's nice to see our friend in the World Cup semifinals, but we want to see him play the whole game. »

The atmosphere within the group

« I feel good in this group. I adapted quickly last season. We’re trying to integrate the two new players as quickly as possible. I’m not going to say that I’m taking them under my wing because they are the same age as me, but we want them to get the hang of it as quickly as possible. It’s important to bond quickly and move forward together. »
