Gerland in female mode

OL's women will be trying, at 17h00, to pick up their ticket for the last 16 of the Champions League against AZ.

The 2-1 win brought back from Alkmaar three weeks ago, put Lyon on the way to the last 16 of the competition. Not only because an away win still offers good hope for qualification, but also because this first leg at the AFAS Stadion highlighted the gap between the two teams. With a little more realism, Patrice Lair’s players could have left the Netherlands with a much bigger lead. It has to be said that after the goals of Eugenie Le Sommer and Wendie Renard, AZ showed a great deal of courage, selflessness, and physical freshness in order to reduce the score in fornt of their supporters.

Are Ed Engelkes’s protégés capable of holding on for so long at Gerland? Nothing is less sure when you know that Lyon generally manage landslide victories at home. Last season for example: 5-0 against Masinac and Hjorring, 3-0 against Torres and 3-2 against Umeå, averaging four goals per game and conceding a goal every two games. This allows them to go into the match with legitimate serenity, especially since OL will have two additional offensive advantages compared to the first game: Elodie Thomis who was injured, and Camille Abily freshly landed from the United States. Sonia Bompastor is not yet qualified for the European Cup. We are also expecting confirmation of the rise in form of the Lyon squad, impressive in the 3-1 win at Juvisy, on Sunday in the league.

In case of qualification, OL will probably be faced with the Russians of Rossiyanka, 3-1 winners in their first leg against Legenda Chernigiv, in the Ukraine. The return leg is scheduled for 13:00, Lyon will be aware of their potential opponents before the kickoff of their game.
