OL eliminated from Coupe de la Ligue

Despite taking an early lead, Olympique Lyonnais suffered a heady 4-1 defeat at the hands of Montpellier and are eliminated from the Coupe de la Ligue at the first hurdle.

10’. Goal from Myziane with a powerful shot into the roof of the net (0-1)
17’. Montpellier equalise through Camara (1-1)
22’. Camara at the double from close range (2-1)
45+1’. Sambia's free-kick evades everyone and ends up in the back of the net (3-1)
50’. Ferri's half-volley flies just over the crossbar.
69’. Cornet's hard cross is almost turned into his own net by Cozza.
86’. Penalty put away by Bérigaud. (4-1)

OL were back on Cup duty in midweek, in between two important Ligue 1 matches and coach Bruno Genesio rang the changes. Myziane, who didn't play the last two games led the line in attack. It was a coaching decision that paid off almost immediately when the man filling Mariano's boots scored a magnificent goal from a pass from captain Jordan Ferri (10’, 0-1). It was just reward for a good start and Les Lyonnais had done what they couldn't do a month earlier in the scoreless Ligue 1 Conforama draw between the two sides... Unfortunately, the goal only sparked Montpellier into life...

Camara took advantage of the spaces afforded him to give Montpellier the half-time lead  (22’, 1-1 and  22’, 2-1).  Mathieu Gorgelin was then beaten by a free-kick that no-one managed to get a touch too (45 +1', 3-1). OL had all the ball in the second half, but were unable to cause Hilton and Co. any undue concern. In the end a penalty from Bérigaud completed a bad night at the office for Lyon (86', 4-1). OL must now bounce back immediately and focus on Sunday's Ligue 1 clash with Marseille at the Groupama Stadium.

Myziane opens the scoring

Myziane must have thought he'd done the hardest part when he opened the scoring. But instead of setting Lyon on their way, the goal marked the end of their promising start. OL sat back and barely ten minutes later, Camara equalised. A good ball in from the left from Cozza saw the 34-year-old striker dive in to score and install a little doubt in Lyon minds. And it was Camara again that netted a second as Lyon lost control of the game.

Pape Cheikh Diop became the sixth Spaniard to play a competitive match for OL after Jaime Solas, Alfonso Fernandez-Leal, Marc Crosas, Sergi Darder and Mariano Diaz. He also became the 522nd player to wear the colours since the club was founded in 1950.

Expert's Eye

Jérémy Berthod:
"I'm disappointed with the result and the performance. Certain players had the chance to show what they can do out there, and they didn't make the most of it. We opened the scoring and then switched off, especially in terms of our combativeness and defensive organisation. We used the ball better in the second half but we didn't play well enough to win a match at this level and we're eliminated at the same stage of the competition as last season."
