In front up until the last five minutes, OL lost out in extra-time (1-2) under the impulsion of two former OL players.
A big game awaited OL for this last round of 32 match in the Coupe de la Ligue. The OL supporters made sure that former goalkeeper Gregory Coupet received a welcome worthy of what he did for the club.
The Olympians quickly demonstrated what they could do with Pjanic who fired just over the bar following a good cross from Jérémy Pied (1’). This same Jérémy Pied showed himself untenable and played in Bafé Gomis and at the entrance to box. Unfortunately the striker was unable to hit the target as well (7’). Claude Puel's players had started the game in the best way. Jimmy Briand and his teammates were doing well moving forward but were lacking in the final pass. Gomis was again well served by Pied but his volley scraped the right post of Greg Coupet’s goal (28’). The Parisians retorted on the half hour mark with a powerful shot well saved by Rémy Vercoutre. The will-o’-the-wisp Jérémy Pied slipped another perfect ball to Jimmy Briand whose shot was deflected by Camara leaving Greg Coupet helpless (38’). The Olympians took a well deserved lead just before the break.
The beginning of the second half was more to the benefit of players from the capital. They accumulated many corners but were not really dangerous. The Olympians were now operating on the counter attack. Despite several good opportunities Lyon failed to make the break. As a pivot, Hoarau found the glove of Rémy Vercoutre who deflected the shot onto his post and afterwards the Parisians continued to play while Jérémy Pied was down. This lack of fair play triggered a scuffle that lasted several minutes (77’). Jérémy Pied, probably the best OL player on the pitch, catapulted a missile which smashed into the crossbar of Coupet (80’). Less than two minutes later it was Pjanic who saw his free kick fly into the post. What would happen happened. From a confused action, Bodmer picked up the ball on the edge of the area and sent it into the back of the net. The former in Lyon player took this opportunity to go and tease the OL bench. The Parisians came close to putting the match beyond OL late in the game but Rémy Vercoutre pulled off a great save from a header by Ludovic Giuly. The 22 players ended regulation time with the score drawn and therefore had to go through extra time.
Lisandro came on early in extra time, which forced Lyon into a tactical reorganization. Ceara fired onto Vercoutre’s crossbar and in the continuity Giuly picked up the ball and crucified the Lyon keeper. Paris moved in front. Pied tried a shot during the second half of extra time but without success (107’). Despite several attacking movements, Lovren and his teammates were defeated and leave the Coupe de la Ligue in the last round of 32.
