In June, Claude Puel is named General Manager, Spain win the Euro 2008 and the "no" vote wins the referendum...

It is the event, even though an expected one, of the month of June 2008: one year after his arrival at the head of the first team, Alain Perrin is sacked on the 2nd of June, the OL Board having « taken note of a certain number of malfunctions on a technical level, which have been a weight on the professional group throughout the season ». On the 18th of June, Claude Puel is installed as General Manager. As OL’s president, Jean-Michel Aulas, explained his arrival « is not a revolution but an evolution » : the former Monaco and Lille coach comes in with an objective to « acheive something better than the quarter-final in the Champions League within four years ».

Spain win the 13th edotion of the competition with their attacking flair. Xavi is voted best player of the tournament and David Villa top scorer (4 goals). Knocked out in the semi-final, Russia and their playmaker, Archavine, impressed. France however, only managed to score one goal and were eliminated from the competition after a draw against Romania (0 – 0) and defeats at the hands of Holland (1 – 4) and Italy (0 – 2).

Far from the footballing world, the month of June is marked by the large victory of the « no » vote during the referendum on the Traety of Lisbon in Ireland on Thursday the 12th of June (53,4%). Against a coalition of the majority of political parties, the partisans of the « no » vote base their arguments on the « good old days » menacing people with job losses, the loss of neutrality for the country, an obligation to legalise abortion, the loss of the Irish commissioner and the a harmonisation of taxes on business. A new vote could be held before the end of 2009.
