The miracle of Amiens!

After trailing early and a below-par first-half display against Amiens, Olympique Lyonnais recorded a thrilling late win, courtesy of a Houssem Aouar brace to reclaim second spot on the Ligue 1 ladder.

9’. Gakpe opens the scoring after Lyon fail to clear a cross from the left. 1-0.
19’. Memphis sees his free-kick ruled out for offside… very close.
20’. Lopes makes a great save to deny Gakpe.
55’. Memphis sees his shot saved by Gurtner.
63’. El Hajjam stings Lopes' palms from distance.
79’. Aouar equalises with a nie one-two with Ndombele. 1-1.
89’. Penalty conceded by Tousart… but Kakuta hits the post.
90+2’. Genesio sent from the bench.
90+3’. Aouar turns home Mariano's cross for the winner. 1-2.

The second leg of a three-match road trip (after Atalanta in the Europa League and before Montpellier in the Coupe de la Ligue) saw OL in Amiens with the aim of reclaiming second spot on the ladder. But things didn't start as planned with Gakpe opening the scoring in the ninth minute. Game on and both sides had chances. Les Lyonnais struggled to get control of the game and shot just four times at goal in the first half without getting a single one on target.

Memphis was the first to test the Amiens 'keeper as Lyon showed renewed ambition after the break. But Amiens also had chances to extend their lead before Aouar equalised, latching onto a Ndombele cut-back (78'). Les Lyonnais pushed harder still, but Amiens could have claimed all three points from the penalty spot, only for Kakuta to hit the post (89'). Bruno Genesio, was sent from the bench as tempers flared... but Aouar beat Gurtner at the back post for a precious three points and second place on the ladder!

Amiens' missed penalty in the 89th minute

Gaël Kakuta played a starring role on Sunday afternoon. Untenable throughout the 90 minutes with his dribbling and vision, the Amiens midfielder missed the penalty that would almost certainly have given his side victory after a foul by Lucas Tousart in the box in the 89th minute. Three minutes after seeing his spot-kick hit the post, he could only look on as Houssem Aouar netted the winner for OL.

OL continue their superb away campaign in Ligue 1. The win over Amiens was the fifth win in a row on the road after Troyes, Saint-Etienne, Nice and Caen. 5 matches during which Nabil Fekir and Co. scored 19 goals and conceded just two. Since the start of the season, Les Lyonnais have picked up 20 points from a possible 27.

Expert Eye

Jérémy Berthod:
"We are happy with the final result. The team really dug deep to get this victory. The first half was a disaster. The final minutes were crazy with Amiens missing the penalty and then Aouar's second goal. It reminds me a little of the match against Monaco. It could turn out to be a benchmark victory. We didn't play a super game, but that can happen during a season. The most important thing is to win and that's what we did."
